THE city’s hotel to the stars is back up for sale.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been a permanent resident of the hotel since he took on the job

Westmont Hospitality Group has instructed CBRE to secure a purchaser for the five-star Lowry Hotel, just two years after acquiring the site from Rocco Forte Hotels for a reported £40 million.

The hotel was first put up for sale in 2007, however a lack of interest forced the group to slash the price tag.

The news follows a period of profit growth at the hotel, which recently posted pre-tax profits of £1.3 million in the twelve months leading up to April, despite a £4 million refurbishment in 2015.

A statement from Westmont says the 'hotel continues to outperform the market after a record year in 2016.'

The 165 bedroom hotel – which opened in 2001 – has accommodated many of the world’s most famous figures, including Chinese president Xi Jingping, the Beckhams and Beyonce.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been a permanent resident of the hotel since he took on the job in May 2016.

Work recently began to clear the ground for a new 1000-apartment scheme by developers Dandara, adjacent to the hotel on Chapel Street.
